Away this summer? How to make your home less attractive to burglars

Are you heading away for a few days or perhaps a longer period this summer? If so, it is wise to give your home a little extra care before you close the door. A home that looks lived-in is often less interesting to burglars, and with a few simple tricks, you can reduce the risk of unwelcome visits.

Review locks and windows

Check that doors, windows, and any patio or balcony doors have functioning and approved locks. Don't forget storage units, garages, and other areas where valuables may be kept.

Make the home look lived-in

Timer-controlled lighting, motion-sensor lamps, or smart home solutions can make a big difference. Ideally, let a few lamps turn on and off at different times.

Enlist the help of neighbors or friends

Ask someone to empty the mailbox, water the plants, move the trash bins, or perhaps park their car in your driveway. Small signs of activity ensure the home doesn't look abandoned.

Avoid displaying valuables

Put away jewelry, electronics, and other valuables from windows and visible surfaces. The less that is visible from the outside, the better.

Be careful on social media

It can be tempting to share vacation photos in real-time, but remember that this can also signal that your home is empty. Consider saving your best vacation photos until you are back home.

Keep the outdoor area tidy

Lock up bicycles, put away tools, and make sure that ladders or other objects cannot be used to gain entry through windows or balconies.

Consider an alarm and cameras

A visible alarm, cameras, or security decals can have a deterrent effect. If you already have an alarm, remember to activate it before you leave.
